"And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." ~ Matthew 16:18
It was, I believe, from Mr. Mark Shea's essay that I came to realize that gates are defensive. Gates are used to protect that which is found within the walls from the attacks which come from without those walls. When Our Blessed Lord says that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church, what he is saying is they will not survive against the attacks of the Church Militant. We, living Christians, we are the Church Militant. We are the fighters and warriors and we must, need to take the war to the gates of hell.
The inhabitants of hell are not corporeal. Hell's generals are made of the same substance as the Angels of God. They are not harmed by physical weapons, but they are destroyed by the spiritual weapons with which God has armed us. They use guerrilla warfare and make their attacks through influencing the souls of human beings living on earth.
The Church provides us with body armour which protect us against the lies and influences of Evil. Each and every sacrament, from Baptism to Extreme Unction, and each time Communion is consumed Christ through the Church covers us with body armour. Our Good Lord understood that to send us into the fray and attack hell's battlements we would need defenses - yes, and He has provided well to our defenses, the sacraments.
But what the Church militant needs is arms to attack the battlements, hell's gates, hell's defenses. And our Lord and by extension the Church on Earth have given us weapons too.
I will list some of our weapons.
Our Lady's Rosary: The Church's battering ram.
Chaplet of Divine Mercy: Our Trebuchet
Every devotion : a canon
Every prayer: a canon ball, a boulder a thrust of the above.
The words of Holy Scripture: Our Battle Axe, our gladius, our Ak 47, our sling shot.
Our Good Lord and our Church does not leave us without armaments, or without fire power. IT is our duty, nay, our mandate to take our fight to the very gates of hell, the thwart the influence of evil, on this world.
But hey that's just me, and what do I know?
Scripture to keep in mind
Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief, A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren. My son, keep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother. ***Cf:Douay-Rheims Proverbs 6: 16-20
